Opera for the whole family

For the first time, MUO will be presenting work by a Canadian composer. John Davies children's opera The Billy Goats Gruff will be performed in both the RWB School and the Platform Gallery. This production will be directed by Shannon Melody Unger and musically led by pianist Megan Dufrat. On their travels home from school, three billy goats get waylaid by a bully who will not let them cross the bridge. The opera explores the themes of bullying, feelings and how to work and play together.

Mozart's Classic Drama

New this season, our production of Idomeneo will take place in the Stuart Clark Garden of Contemplation in the Canadian Museum for Human Rights in downtown Winnipeg. This newly adapted and re-arranged version of the classic Greek tale will focus on consequences of colonialist rhetoric in international conflict, the treatment of refugees, and the potential for international cooperation. 

Featuring over 20 singers and a chamber orchestra of 11, watch this masterpiece come to life in one of Winnipeg's most iconic architectural wonders.

Puccini's Double Header

Deep in the heart of downtown Winnipeg, MUO will be presenting two of Puccini's famous one-act works: Suor Angelica and Gianni Schicchi. Never before performed in Winnipeg, get ready for Italian opera at its best. Suor Angelica, a daughter of a wealthy family, has been left in a nunnery after having a child out of wedlock. Her aunt, the princess, visits her to deliver soul-crushing news. Gianni Schicchi, the trickster, has been hired by a wealthy family to change the will of their uncle who left all of their money to charity. The family get more than they bargain for when Gianni Schicchi gets the last laugh.

Opera - up close and personal

Opera 360° will be presented with a chamber orchestra of 24 conducted by Brendan McKeen. Artists of the 2017 main stage Season will be performing selections from Rigoletto, Eugene Onegin, and Roméo et Juliette. Presented in the grand foyer of the Winnipeg Art Gallery, audiences will surround the orchestra and singers in a circle, mere feet away, so they can truly appreciate the raw power of an opera singers voice and the inner workings of an orchestra. The performance will be presented in concert-style and allow the audience to see the artists as who they are instead of characters or background orchestral performers.
